My name is Siju Yusuf from Nigeria and I am studying MA Media and Communication at Bournemouth University. There are several services that Bournemouth University has put in place to help you with life during and after University. The Career Services team at BU is one of them.

Boosting your professional profile

Situated in The Edge Student Development Centre on Talbot Campus (just outside the Sir Michael Cobham Library), Career Services is open to all students. The staff offer support and career advice for students, such as helping to prepare CV’s and gaining insights into the labour market.

Periodically, the office holds events to educate students on placements, resources, job opportunities and employer requirements. On one occasion, when I just had a couple questions, I was able to speak with the officers without booking an appointment. However, an appointment is usually required.

Make the most of MyCareerHub

Booking an appointment is not the only way to utilise Career Services. There is also an online career system called MyCareerHub containing all relevant information for students to access and make informed decisions, such as CV writing tips, placement opportunities, job vacancies, career advice, and top graduate employers.

There are several useful tools on the system. One of them helps identify the skills employers are looking for and assists students with identifying which skills they have that meet these requirements.

The tool that I find very useful is the Interview Practice Tool. This enables you hold a mock interview in a recorded session, which you can replay and rate by yourself.  Apart from preparing you for your interview, it also enables you to identify areas of improvement and make changes before your real interview.
