Harriet Davis, recipient of a BU Music Scholarship, tells us how she’s making the most of her uni experience…

Harriet DavisSince starting my degree in Advertising and Marketing at Bournemouth three years ago, I’ve wanted to make the most of my time here by utilising the opportunities available to all students. I have been a keen pianist for many years, and once I’d achieved all my ABRSM grades at School, I hoped that I could continue to pursue my hobby at college and uni in order to progress with my music. During the time I’ve studied at Bournemouth, I have always been mindful of the chances to get involved in extra-curricular events and activities that go beyond my course subject, and the BU Music Scholarship really motivated and encouraged me to progress.

Surviving on a student budget, I was worried that it would be a challenge to continue to fund regular piano lessons, and I couldn’t help but feel that it would be a waste to invest if I didn’t have the chance to perform or meet other students that were also keen to get involved with BU Music. Receiving the BU Music scholarship meant that I had some fantastic benefits that have really helped me continue to enjoy progressing as a musician. The scholarship funding meant that I could afford to pay for weekly piano lessons, where lessons were tailored to fit around my academic timetable, and catered to suit my level of ability and what I wanted to play. It also meant that I was able to get involved in other parts of BU Music, I joined the Chamber Choir where we practise and perform regularly at events throughout the year.

The best part about the Scholarship is the opportunities to play with other Scholars. It’s not only enabled me to meet new people outside of my course, but has given me the confidence to perform solos in front of audiences, something I never thought I could do! Inviting friends and family to watch the concerts is a really nice way to show how the scholarship has made a difference, and my time at uni wouldn’t be half as good if it wasn’t for the benefits of the scholarship opportunity.

Music scholarships are available to both undergrad and postgrad students. Find out more about the BU Music Scholarship.
