Bournemouth University and University Hospitals Dorset (UHD) have been recognised with a prestigious Research Team Impact Prize<\/em> from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) at an awards ceremony held in London on 24 September 2026.<\/p>\n

The award celebrates the success and impact of the Cycling against Hip Pain (CHAIN)<\/strong> programme, an innovative community-based intervention designed to support people living with hip osteoarthritis. The programme was conceived by Professor Robert Middleton and Professor Tom Wainwright, and was first launched in 2013 with the aim of improving mobility, reducing pain, and enhancing quality of life for patients through a combination of education and physical activity.<\/p>\n

Over the past decade, CHAIN has helped hundreds of people manage their symptoms of hip osteoarthritis without immediately requiring surgical intervention. The programme consists of eight weekly sessions that combine expert-led education about managing osteoarthritis with supervised static cycling classes. By empowering participants to take an active role in their health, the programme has demonstrated benefits for both patients and healthcare services.<\/p>\n

The success of CHAIN has led to a virtual course being released and has contributed to growing evidence supporting exercise-based approaches to managing musculoskeletal conditions. The future goal is to roll CHAIN out nationally by providing other clinical teams across the UK with the knowledge and skills to set up their own interventions.<\/p>\n

Tom Wainwright, Professor of Orthopaedics at Bournemouth University and Consultant Physiotherapist at University Hospitals Dorset, said:<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing recognised for this award is testament to the hard work that BU clinical academics, researchers, and UHD NHS clinicians have done over the last 10 years to bring this programme into the community. <\/em><\/p>\n

The NIHR Research Team Impact Prize recognises multidisciplinary teams whose research has had a major impact on health and wealth through research, working with collaborators and partners to ensure excellent research that leads to maximum impact. The award highlights the outstanding collaboration between Bournemouth University and University Hospitals Dorset, and the lasting impact of their work in improving musculoskeletal health and patient outcomes.<\/p>\n
