He took time out from this programme between 2010 to 2012 to undertake a PhD with the Bone and Joint Research Group at the University of Southampton as a MRC Research Fellow. His area of research was into novel polymer scaffold skeletal stem cell composites as potential synthetic bone graft substitutes.
