Jo Johnson’s statement on HE and Research following the EU Referendum

DailyBUzz-1024x553A week on from the day UK voters cast their ballots in the historical EU Referendum, amidst the uncertainty lies the promising and motivational mindset of “Keep Calm and Carry On”.    Although the campaigns brought out a division within the nation, we in HE see many united to push through a positive message, that we will always provide a warm welcome to the many staff and students from beyond the UK.

Many universities have soothed the uncertainty felt across the sector by confirming that the status of EU staff and students in the UK, and the status of British staff and students abroad, will not see any immediate changes.  Of course, future changes will be expected as negotiations between the UK and EU take place after the new Prime Minister expected in the Autumn decides to trigger Article 50.

Jo Johnson, the Minister of Universities and Science, in a ‘Statement on higher education and research following the EU Referendum has clarified a few concerns.  Jo Johnson has assured current EU students and those about to start this year, who are eligible under the current rules, that they will continue ‘to receive loans and grants from the Student Loans Company’ over the duration of their degrees.  More information has been provided on the Student Loans Company website.

There are also no changes expected to our visa policies nor the freedom of movement between EU member states as of yet, Johnson assured.  He also confirmed that the Government will intend to ‘press ahead with the Higher Education and Research Bill’.
