Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, progressive and disabling auto-immune disease. Over
690,000 adults in the UK live with the condition. Dysphagia is the medical term for swallowing difficulties; conditions such as dysphagia can make swallowing tablets painful and sometimes impossible. The NHS advises that, if it is safe to do so, users may crush tablets to administer them. It is estimated that 60% of older people have trouble swallowing medication. The nature of RA means that manual dexterity is considerably reduced, making tasks like crushing tablets a problem.
Problems with existing crushers range from their ineffective nature to a lack of consideration for users with limited dexterity. EasyTab addresses the above needs while being simple and affordable. The product focuses on the needs of arthritis sufferers with the intention of providing a pain-free experience for the user. EasyTab is a simple but effective solution that has been designed in conjunction with end users and specialists.
Throughout this project I have enjoyed understanding the issue of RA from the user perspective. I believe that empathy for the users combined with professional insights has allowed me to create a suitable solution to the problem.
