At Bournemouth University we are responding to research that considers how teachers of the future will work with their classes.<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-75231 \" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bournemouth.ac.uk\/research\/files\/2019\/02\/Cafesci4-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"355\" height=\"266\" \/>\n<p>Drawing upon examples from fields as diverse as archaeology and nursing,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/staffprofiles.bournemouth.ac.uk\/display\/dholley\">Professor Debbie Holley, P<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/staffprofiles.bournemouth.ac.uk\/display\/efalconer\">rofessor Liz Falconer<\/a>\u00a0and Heidi Singleton (PhD Student) from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www1.bournemouth.ac.uk\/about\/centre-excellence-learning\">Centre for Excellence in Learning<\/a>(CEL) showcased recent innovations to help support student learning, both inside and outside their\u00a0 physical classroom.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-75206\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bournemouth.ac.uk\/research\/files\/2019\/02\/cafesci3-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"239\" height=\"319\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A Wicked Challenge<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s our wicked challenge\u201d, Debbie told the BU Cafe Scientifique audience on Tuesday evening, as she outlined the current lay of the land in terms of Virtual Reality (VR) and Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) in higher education, emphasising that it is an educators\u2019 duty to offer digital opportunities to 21<sup>st\u00a0<\/sup>Century students. Debbie explained, how although technology can be of great benefit, the \u201cwicked challenge\u201d is defining and addressing the significant challenges impeding TEL adoption in higher education.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Time to engage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After discussing their work, the CEL team, including BU Learning Technologists Stephen Pyne and David Hunt got interactive, giving the Cafe Sci audience the\u00a0opportunity to engage with the Google Cardboard headsets, encouraging them to try out different virtual reality scenarios.<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-75160\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bournemouth.ac.uk\/research\/files\/2019\/02\/cafesci13-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"287\" height=\"382\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-75219\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bournemouth.ac.uk\/research\/files\/2019\/02\/cafesci17-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"285\" height=\"381\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-75264\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bournemouth.ac.uk\/research\/files\/2019\/02\/IMG_2341-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"285\" height=\"380\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-75217\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bournemouth.ac.uk\/research\/files\/2019\/02\/cafesci16-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"286\" height=\"381\" \/>\n<p><strong>Virtual Avebury<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was fascinating to hear how Liz and her team had used Lidar data to simulate how Avebury might have looked and sounded circa 2,300 BCE in an immersive 3D virtual reality environment.\u00a0 Liz reported findings from her large scale project which was conducted with members of the public at the Avebury site<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-75189\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bournemouth.ac.uk\/research\/files\/2019\/02\/IMG_2284.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"342\" height=\"456\" \/>\u00a0Not only did people enjoy visiting the VR Avebury, but for some it brought out an emotional reaction as they felt they had experienced some of what it would have been like to have visited the ancient site when it was still complete. One of the participants said; \u201cI felt completely immersed in the landscape. It was really interesting to see the difference between the real stones outside and the simulation. The difference between the sizes of the banks and ditches was particularly striking!\u201d Liz concluded with her favourite finding; that women over the age of 60 were the third most likely group to enjoy gaming (mostly on their mobile phones).\u00a0 It reminds us all not to pre-judge what we think people will find enjoyable and useful as a learning experience.<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>VR Deteriorating Patient<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Heidi explained and demonstrated her research around VR Deteriorating Patient, a computer simulator that trains students how to nurse a patient who is suffering from Diabetic Hypoglycaemia<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-75182\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bournemouth.ac.uk\/research\/files\/2019\/02\/cafesci15.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"396\" height=\"528\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Working with CEL,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bournemouth.ac.uk\/about\/our-faculties\/faculty-health-social-sciences\">HSS\u00a0<\/a>and in particular\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/staffprofiles.bournemouth.ac.uk\/display\/jjames\">Dr Janet James<\/a>, Heidi is conducting an RCT to compare the VR training exercise with traditional teaching methods.\u00a0 The initial findings are very positive, with students reporting that it helps to bridge the theory practice gap, some saying; \u201cYou can practice and it doesn\u2019t matter if you make wrong decisions. It is a safe environment.\u201d \u201cIt will stick in my mind better.
