{"id":7925,"date":"2018-05-08T10:55:12","date_gmt":"2018-05-08T10:55:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/cel\/?p=7925"},"modified":"2018-05-08T10:55:12","modified_gmt":"2018-05-08T10:55:12","slug":"try-test-talk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/2018\/05\/08\/try-test-talk\/","title":{"rendered":"Try, Test, Talk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For over 10 years the Business School has been using professional engagement to develop the confidence, soft skills and resilience students need to make the transition from higher education to employment.\u00a0 An approach called Try, Test, Talk has been developed by Dr Karen Thompson of the Department of Leadership, Strategy and Organisations, and is shown here in use with second year BA Business Studies students.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ky1b0Q-8KbY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Projects undertaken by small teams of students working with external stakeholders are at the heart of a range of units at levels 5, 6 and 7.\u00a0 As Karen explains, \u201cOften the most the difficult part of a project is the beginning, when the objectives are unclear and there may be many competing ideas.\u00a0 We do not shield students from the early challenges and the difficulties of navigating through the definition stage\u201d.\u00a0 Built on the notion that \u201cResilience is built by facing fear, not avoiding it\u201d (Byron 2018), we have developed an approach that encourages students to TRY out ideas, TEST what they create, and TALK about the project and their learning.\u00a0 This approach not only develops resilience, but also builds students\u2019 confidence and communication skills that are essential for employment.\u00a0 The value of the approach is illustrated by feedback from a project stakeholder:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026 when we take on a graduate, it can take a couple of years before they are having a directly positive impact on the business.
