The Centre for Midwifery, Maternal & Perinatal Health in the Faculty of Health\u00a0& Social Sciences has for the third time running been given the accreditation of being\u00a0Baby Friendly for its midwifery education.\u00a0 The team from <\/span>UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) came to BU to assess our Midwifery programmes . We scored very highly between 90-100% in many areas. The report highlighted many of our strengths in relation to the BFI programme including the FUSION of teaching, research and practice. They also commended our enthusiastic students who demonstrated how well they could support breastfeeding women. \"\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018<\/span><\/i>Bournemouth University presents a positive approach towards implementing the Baby Friendly learning outcomes and has consistently displayed enthusiasm and commitment …the assessment revealed that students continue to receive an excellent standard of education with previous results being further improved upon. Additional innovative education and assessment methods have been implemented for example all students are able to attend a breastfeeding clinic… There is very clear evidence of a firm commitment to breastfeeding within the lecturing team with a strong research and publication history.<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

All students displayed enthusiasm and interest in breastfeeding and were able to clearly articulate how they would support mothers … to describe and demonstrate how to support a mother with positioning in a mother centred way being particularly notable as well as their ability to describe how they would manage feeding in a vulnerable baby\u2026 In addition their understanding of the standards related to relationship building and responsiveness was of a high standard as was their ability to demonstrate sensitive and appropriate communications skills.\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

We are proud of\u00a0the whole midwifery team in achieving this result but most especially the BU students\u00a0who were assessed as part of the process and demonstrated their excellent knowledge, experiences and competency in supporting mothers.\u00a0 CMMPH\u00a0<\/span>will, of course, not be complacent and will continue to explore innovative ways of enhancing the education at BU so that students continue to qualify as confident, competent practitioners meeting UNICEF UK BFI standards.<\/span><\/p>\n
