{"id":6141,"date":"2017-09-26T09:04:29","date_gmt":"2017-09-26T09:04:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/cel\/?p=6141"},"modified":"2017-09-26T10:26:47","modified_gmt":"2017-09-26T10:26:47","slug":"multi-sensory-vr-experience-of-william-talbot-photograph-exhibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/2017\/09\/26\/multi-sensory-vr-experience-of-william-talbot-photograph-exhibition\/","title":{"rendered":"Multi-Sensory\u00a0VR\u00a0Experience\u00a0of\u00a0William\u00a0Talbot\u00a0Photograph\u00a0Exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #999999\">Posted on behalf of Heidi Singleton<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0new\u00a0dimension\u00a0that\u00a0extends\u00a0the\u00a0physical\u00a0space\u00a0into\u00a0an\u00a0experimental\u00a0virtual\u00a0world\u00a0is\u00a0sweeping\u00a0into museums\u00a0and\u00a0galleries\u00a0across\u00a0the\u00a0UK.<\/p>\n<p>This autumn Thresholds is restaging Fox Talbot\u2019s first photography exhibition and the riot of 1839.\u00a0 It uses some of the latest multi-sensory VR technology, enabling participants to wander freely through the room and examine Fox Talbot&#8217;s early prints.\u00a0 The Vive headset and backpack enable untethered walking around and objects from the displays can be touched.\u00a0 This feature is a relatively unexplored aspect of the medium.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/2017\/09\/26\/multi-sensory-vr-experience-of-william-talbot-photograph-exhibition\/img_0301\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6145\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6145\" src=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2017\/09\/IMG_0301-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"429\" height=\"572\" srcset=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2017\/09\/IMG_0301-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2017\/09\/IMG_0301-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2017\/09\/IMG_0301.jpg 1152w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 429px) 100vw, 429px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I was lucky enough to attend the display this Saturday morning.\u00a0\u00a0It was the first time that I had worn the headset in a gallery experience of this kind.\u00a0\u00a0Once the headset and backpack had been fitted; the experience began by being led up the entrance ramp by a National Trust volunteer.\u00a0\u00a0As soon as I entered the white room the headset visuals and audio commenced.\u00a0\u00a0I was drawn to the warmth and crackle of the fire in the room (which was positioned around a real heater), before walking around the room to admire the prints and artefacts.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/2017\/09\/26\/multi-sensory-vr-experience-of-william-talbot-photograph-exhibition\/img_0307\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6149\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6149 \" src=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2017\/09\/IMG_0307-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"566\" srcset=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2017\/09\/IMG_0307-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2017\/09\/IMG_0307-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2017\/09\/IMG_0307.jpg 1152w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>As I moved around the room I could see ghosts of other participants and carefully avoided them as I touched the sides of the exhibit cases.\u00a0\u00a0I stopped to look at a portrait and watched a spider crawl across the frame, though forgot to look for the mouse that I had been told would run across the floor.\u00a0The ticking of a clock caught my attention and I noted that it showed the correct time.<\/p>\n<p>As I moved towards the ghostly figure of Fox Talbot, I was distracted by the cries of Chartist protesters outside.\u00a0 I turned to look out through a digital window into the street below and watched as the protesters carried lit torches and threw a stone which smashed a window.\u00a0 The headsets had been calibrated so that people of average height could view the room, therefore I had to stand on my tiptoes to peer out of the window.\u00a0 This added to the sense of reality.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/2017\/09\/26\/multi-sensory-vr-experience-of-william-talbot-photograph-exhibition\/img_0299\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6144\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6144\" src=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2017\/09\/IMG_0299-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2017\/09\/IMG_0299-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2017\/09\/IMG_0299-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2017\/09\/IMG_0299-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2017\/09\/IMG_0299.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>The headset was comfortable (for the short time I wore it).\u00a0\u00a0The visuals did drop out at one point (possibly as I stretched too far to examine an object); this made me feel momentarily giddy.\u00a0\u00a0The entire experience lasted less than nine minutes (I had been told that that was how long the battery pack lasted), but it was a memorable encounter.\u00a0\u00a0As they say: \u2018like stepping back in time.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>BU does not currently have a Vive but has an Oculus Rift which is reasonably comparable.<\/p>\n<p>The Thresholds exhibition is running at Lacock Abbey until the 14\u00a0October\u00a02017;
