Felix Marrington-Reeve reports on his\u00a0co-creation project ‘Splash Dance’ with Quentin Corker-Marin and Dr.\u00a0Reza Yousefzadeh as student and academic partners respectively:<\/p>\n

Aims<\/strong>
\n\u25cf To produce relatively high quality motion capture
\n\u25cf To add a sense of \u201chuman\u201d presence to the piece through the camera, as if it had been\u00a0\u201cshot\u201d by a production team
\n\u25cf To create a fun, colourful short film<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Finding a Dancer<\/strong><\/p>\n

We knew that we wanted our dancer to be skilled in order for\u00a0the dance to look professional. I emailed Pavilion Dance South\u00a0West, and they invited us to pitch our project to Lisa Lort, who\u00a0works there. She recommended dancer Dan Martin, who is\u00a0involved in a number of projects in London. We followed her\u00a0advice and contacted Dan, who was enthusiastic about the\u00a0project, and agreed to help us. The funding allowed us to cover\u00a0Dan\u2019s travel and accommodation costs, which meant that he
\ncould travel from London to work with us.<\/p>\n

Working with Dan<\/strong><\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

We met with Dan in London and showed him some of our inspiration for the project and the\u00a0kinds of dance that we wanted out of him. We then spent a few hours with him in a dance\u00a0studio, filming him dancing and giving him feedback. We came away with a large amount of\u00a0footage, which was really great as it allowed me to edit a video together with the live action\u00a0video. We used some of the funding from the co-creation scheme to travel to London to meet\u00a0Dan in person, which was useful for the collaboration.<\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

Motion Capture<\/strong>
\nWe used the studio which the university provided to us to capture Dan\u2019s dance. We could\u00a0then transfer this movement onto a computer generated character.<\/p>\n\"\"<\/a>\n

The motion was applied to a 3d model and then tweaked manually to fix any errors and to\u00a0make it seem more natural. We then added a muscle simulation on top, which gave more\u00a0realistic deformations in the 3d character model.<\/p>\n
