training in Brightspace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Preparations for the new VLE are well underway. \u00a0In CEL, IT Skills and LLS we have been preparing for the staff training which begins on Monday 8th May. \u00a0The plan is to train 350 academic and administrative staff over the next 8-10 weeks as\u00a0preparation for almost half of all BU programmes transitioning to the new VLE in September 2017.<\/p>\n<p>This post gives an overview of the planned training.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><b>1. \u00a0The goals of the training<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">By the time an attendee has finished the one day of training, they will:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8211; Gain confidence in using the core features of Brightspace through hands-on practice using their\u00a0own materials\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8211; Know how to access their\u00a0own Brightspace test area so that they\u00a0can practice in a safe environment and develop expertise<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8211; Understand the work needed to prepare unit(s) for semester 1\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8211; Know where to go for help and support<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>2. \u00a0What to expect<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Two half days of training are planned:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><span class=\"s1\">Session A<\/span><span class=\"s2\">:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8211; An introduction to Brightspace and the pedagogic and learning opportunities it provides<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8211; An overview of the plan for rolling out Brightspace and a few caveats<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8211; A tour of how Brightspace looks from a student perspective, including its key features<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8211; A guided walkthrough of the core features needed by academic staff including options for structuring unit(s)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8211; How to access and work in your own, individual test area<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8211; Where to go for on-going support and help with\u00a0Brightspace<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8211; An introduction to the Brightspace Community and how it can help you<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8211; Participation in an anonymous survey on the learning culture in BU<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><span class=\"s1\">Session B<\/span><span class=\"s2\">:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8211; Following an academic tutor\u2019s workflow, we begin by considering learning\u00a0objectives and what students need to know<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8211; Next, you look at content and create a variety of different items, using release conditions to schedule availability\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8211; You then practice creating discussions and announcements<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8211; Lastly, you work on student-focused areas of Brightspace\u00a0&#8211; the classlist, groups and communication<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">There is a lot to cover in these two sessions and it is 70% hands-on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>3. \u00a0What you need to do in advance of the training<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s3\">We believe the training will be of\u00a0much greater use to\u00a0you the participants are working with a selection of their\u00a0own materials. \u00a0We will therefore ask the attendees to have access to a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">unit guide,\u00a0one or more powerpoint\u00a0presentations, a YouTube or online video that is used, one or more PDF documents and a digital photo of yourself please?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>4. \u00a0Thinking about learning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">The adoption of Brightspace is an opportunity to reflect on how best to facilitate student learning in our unit(s). \u00a0In advance of the training, please take a few moments to review the\u00a0six\u00a0pedagogies in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.bournemouth.ac.uk\/about\/centre-excellence-learning\/tel-toolkit\/pedagogical-approaches-technology-enhanced-learning-tel\">TEL Toolkit<\/a> <\/span><span class=\"s1\">and consider if they could be used in your unit(s). \u00a0A strong pedagogic\u00a0thread will run through both sessions as we approach Brightspace from the perspective of how it can be used to support student learning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We look forward to welcoming colleagues from HSS and SciTech in this first wave of training. \u00a0We will provide updates on how the training is progressing and the innovative ways in which staff are using Brightspace to enhance student learning at BU.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Preparations for the new VLE are well underway. \u00a0In CEL, IT Skills and LLS we have been preparing for the staff training which begins on Monday 8th May. \u00a0The plan is to train 350 academic and administrative staff over the next 8-10 weeks as\u00a0preparation for almost half of all BU programmes transitioning to the new&#8230;
