{"id":3315,"date":"2016-05-16T09:55:09","date_gmt":"2016-05-16T09:55:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/cel\/?p=3315"},"modified":"2016-05-17T21:16:15","modified_gmt":"2016-05-17T21:16:15","slug":"teaching-excellence-framework-a-public-feelings-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/2016\/05\/16\/teaching-excellence-framework-a-public-feelings-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"Teaching Excellence Framework: a public feelings workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/05\/CEL-Teaching-Ex.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3316\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3316\" src=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/05\/CEL-Teaching-Ex-300x294.jpg\" alt=\"CEL Teaching Ex\" width=\"343\" height=\"321\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the day that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/higher-education-white-paper-success-knowledge-economy?platform=hootsuite\">Higher Education White Paper<\/a>, <em>Success as a Knowledge Economy<\/em>, is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wonkhe.com\/blogs\/its-a-nice-day-for-a-white-paper\/\">released <\/a>we thought we would share with you our thoughts\u00a0from the\u00a0Teaching Excellence Framework workshop we facilitated as part of the CEL away day.<\/p>\n<p>This workshop aimed to raise awareness among CEL staff regarding the implications of the Green Paper (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/474266\/BIS-15-623-fulfilling-our-potential-teaching-excellence-social-mobility-and-student-choice-accessible.pdf\">Fulfilling our potential: Teaching Excellence, Social Mobility and Student Choice<\/a>)\u00a0and the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) for their individual work and career development, as well as for the future of CEL in the medium and long term. Through a series of participatory activities, we collectively de-constructed the discourse and main points of the TEF, working on our definitions of teaching excellence vis-\u00e0-vis the indicators outlined in the Green Paper.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/05\/TEF7.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3317\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3317 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/05\/TEF7-300x226.jpg\" alt=\"TEF7\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/05\/TEF7-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/05\/TEF7-768x578.jpg 768w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/05\/TEF7.jpg 973w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>During the presentation, the two slides that generated the most conversation and debate were, first, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nus.org.uk\/en\/news\/the-higher-education-green-paper-in-a-nutshell\/\">Green paper facts gathered by the National Union of Students<\/a>\u00a0which showed what kind of discourse Higher Education is moving into. The slide with a <a href=\"https:\/\/bournemouth.cloud.panopto.eu\/Panopto\/Pages\/Viewer.aspx?id=d787a941-64ab-4706-b96e-5f0fa9bf47b7\" target=\"_blank\">comparison between the TEF and the most recent Research Excellence Framework (Scott, 2016)<\/a>\u00a0also generated attention, mainly due to the disparities between the two, even in the presence of parallels.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, we outlined some of the proposed metrics that could be used to measure what constitutes teaching excellence. Whilst the Green Paper recognises that these are largely proxies rather than direct measures of the quality of teaching, they may be used in addition to other measures for evaluating the quality of teaching and learning that goes on in universities.<\/p>\n<p>A simplistic approach to judging the quality of teaching drawn on the rate of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hesa.ac.uk\/stats-dlhe\">graduate employability<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hesa.ac.uk\/pis\/noncon\">student retention<\/a> can be problematic and requires further probing. Furthermore, some of the existing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/higher-education-network\/2015\/aug\/13\/the-national-student-survey-should-be-abolished-before-it-does-any-more-harm\">controversies<\/a> surrounding the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestudentsurvey.com\/\">National Student Survey<\/a> may generate even more anxieties.<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3319 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/05\/TEF5-1-e1463391378321-210x300.jpg\" alt=\"TEF5\" width=\"210\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/05\/TEF5-1-e1463391378321-210x300.jpg 210w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/05\/TEF5-1-e1463391378321-768x1097.jpg 768w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/05\/TEF5-1-e1463391378321-717x1024.jpg 717w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/05\/TEF5-1-e1463391378321.jpg 1003w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/wonkhe.com\/blogs\/green-paper-responses\/\">responses<\/a> to the Green Paper captured the need for more institutional and qualitative evidence to balance any potential shortcoming of these metrics. Although the White Paper emphasises a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/higher-education-white-paper-key-points-glance\">slower phasing<\/a> in of a framework for increasing tuition fees based on measures of teaching excellence, institutions and the sector are going to have to provide evidence of what \u2018excellence\u2019 in teaching and learning means.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We approached some of these issues (how we understand excellence in teaching, what the Teaching Excellence Framework means to us, and where learning fits in with all of this) creatively to explore how we all felt about them.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed changes to higher education in England, including those relating to teaching and learning, are policies lived and felt by all those working within HE. So that we could have a deeper and more collective engagement with the Green Paper, we created a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Feel_Tank_Chicago\">\u201cPublic Feelings\u201d<\/a> space in which participants had the opportunity to explore their feelings through art-based working.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/05\/TEF8.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3320\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3320\" src=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/05\/TEF8-226x300.jpg\" alt=\"TEF8\" width=\"226\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/05\/TEF8-226x300.jpg 226w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/05\/TEF8.jpg 548w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 226px) 100vw, 226px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>An extract from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anncvetkovich.com\/\">Ann Cvetkovich\u2019s<\/a> book, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anncvetkovich.com\/books.html\">Depression: a public feeling<\/a> <\/em>was read out to frame a session in which feelings \u2013 bad, fraught, frustrated feelings, as well as feelings of <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books?id=S5ySGySXJAYC&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=gbs_ge_summary_r&amp;cad=0#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">hope<\/a> \u2013 inform, and perform, our responses to political discourse. Working <em>with <\/em>feelings in this way recognises that \u201cnot only are already political but [transform] our understanding of what counts as political\u201d (Cvetkovich, 2012: 110).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/05\/TEF3.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3321\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3321\" src=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/05\/TEF3-300x173.jpg\" alt=\"TEF3\" width=\"455\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As one of the facilitors wrote:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMy involvement \u00a0in the process of preparing and presenting on the TEF was also very profitable as I became more acquainted with the intricacies within the Green Paper.
