{"id":2851,"date":"2016-02-26T11:25:22","date_gmt":"2016-02-26T11:25:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/cel\/?p=2851"},"modified":"2016-02-29T10:20:54","modified_gmt":"2016-02-29T10:20:54","slug":"fair-access-research-learning-together","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/2016\/02\/26\/fair-access-research-learning-together\/","title":{"rendered":"Fair Access Research: Learning Together"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\">The BU <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.bournemouth.ac.uk\/about\/centre-excellence-learning\/our-research\/fair-access\">Fair Access Research<\/a> (FAR) project is an innovative project which\u00a0seeks to make a difference to students by transforming practice through\u00a0collaborative research.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/02\/cogs.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2857\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2857 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/02\/cogs-300x281.png\" alt=\"cogs\" width=\"300\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/02\/cogs-300x281.png 300w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/02\/cogs-768x718.png 768w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/02\/cogs.png 848w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">We are co-creating research with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.subu.org.uk\/\">students<\/a> and practitioners (both professional and academic) as part of the university&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.offa.org.uk\/agreements\/Bournemouth%201617.pdf\">commitments<\/a> to widening participation to higher education.\u00a0We want to\u00a0make a sustainable difference to students accessing, succeeding and progressing through university\u00a0by undertaking co-creative research to transform practice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Our approach to fair access research centres on\u00a0<strong><em>learning together\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>with students, colleagues from different academic\u00a0and professional backgrounds and with stakeholders from across the higher education sector. By learning together we aim to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>support the\u00a0<em>student journey<\/em> of people from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.offa.org.uk\/universities-and-colleges\/guidance-and-useful-information\/questions-and-answers-on-drawing-up-your-2014-15-access-agreement\/#OFFAcountable\">underrepresented<\/a> backgrounds<\/li>\n<li>develop\u00a0<em>a transferable methodology<\/em>, combining quantitative and qualitative methods<\/li>\n<li>implement\u00a0<em>continued improvement<\/em>\u00a0<em>\u00a0and social capital for organisational<\/em> <em>learning<\/em><\/li>\n<li>establish <em>targeted and reflexive dialogue\u00a0<\/em>inform and transform policy, practice and community engagement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Our research is concerned with <em>process,<\/em>\u00a0with ways of <a href=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/2015\/11\/05\/telling-different-stories-regulation-research-and-widening-participation\/\">thinking<\/a> about and <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.bournemouth.ac.uk\/about\/centre-excellence-learning\/tel-toolkit\/pedagogical-approaches-tel\/collaboration-co-creation\">doing <\/a>widening participation research to change behaviour within BU and beyond. Through learning together, our practice-led research will shape new understandings and changes in policy and practice for fair access to higher education. This Fair Access Research strategy aligns with Bournemouth University\u2019s commitment to a <a href=\"http:\/\/2018.bournemouth.ac.uk\/fusion\/\">fusion<\/a> of research, education, and professional practice.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What we&#8217;re doing:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition to analysing data focusing on retention and attainment, some of the work we&#8217;re doing at the moment includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Working with colleagues from across the sector to develop\u00a0new approaches to evaluating outreach<\/li>\n<li>Undertaking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spa.ac.uk\/\">research<\/a> to enhance understanding of additional assessments in the admissions process<\/li>\n<li>Co-creating research with two\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bournemouth.ac.uk\/research\/2015\/11\/24\/semester-based-undergraduate-research-assistantship-projects-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\">Undergraduate Research Assistant<\/a>s to explore student perceptions of disability<\/li>\n<li>Finding out how academics understand their role in <a href=\"https:\/\/bournemouth.onlinesurveys.ac.uk\/supporting-students\">supporting students&#8217; health and wellbeing<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Working with <a href=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/innovation\/growbu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Grow@BU<\/a>\u00a0to explore their impact on student experiences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Good News<\/strong><\/em><strong><em>:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ed Bickle and Lizzie Gauntlett, <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.bournemouth.ac.uk\/about\/centre-excellence-learning\/our-research\/fair-access\/phd-students\" target=\"_blank\">our PhD students<\/a>, are going to be sharing their research at an<a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/cicp\/main\/events\/widening-participation-conference-he-transforming-lives-through-life-wide-learning-27-28\" target=\"_blank\"> international conference<\/a>\u00a0at the Open University in April 2016. They will be presenting on the use of\u00a0Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to explore widening participation students\u2019 aspiration and academic resilience.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve successfully won funding to hold a workshop as part of BU&#8217;s 2016 <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.bournemouth.ac.uk\/news\/2016-01-06\/festival-learning-2016\" target=\"_blank\">Festival of Learning<\/a>. Our workshop aims to build a regional community of practice\u00a0to tackle the current challenges and opportunities for promoting equity in education.\u00a0In this collective learning event we will work together to negotiate the question, \u201cWhat are the challenges and opportunities for marginalised students to access education the region?\u201d Using participatory debate techniques, our student co-creators will facilitate small groups who will share their expertise to identify solutions and ways of for sustainable ways of promoting equity in education.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Learning with you:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/02\/We_Can_Do_It-1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2860\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2860 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2016\/02\/We_Can_Do_It-1-232x300.jpg\" alt=\"We_Can_Do_It! We\u00a0know that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oecd-ilibrary.org\/docserver\/download\/9114031e.pdf?expires=1456486543&amp;id=id&amp;accname=guest&amp;checksum=6D12C592B53F6D3DF80A7913E48179DF\">&#8220;without equity in education, inequality in society is reinforced and perpetuated&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0<em>can\u00a0<\/em>find ways to make participation in higher education more equitable if\u00a0we harness the collective expertise and experiences of all of our students and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.srhe.ac.uk\/events\/details.asp?eid=204\">practitioners<\/a>. And in so doing, we can make higher education truly excellent.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Together we can challenge why equity in education is so challenging in the first place.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>We want to learn from and with you to support underrepresented and marginalised learners across the whole learning journey (from outreach through to graduation and beyond).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Fair Access Research project is a catalyst to create a community of practice.
