{"id":2438,"date":"2015-12-10T08:45:31","date_gmt":"2015-12-10T08:45:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/cel\/?p=2438"},"modified":"2015-12-10T08:46:56","modified_gmt":"2015-12-10T08:46:56","slug":"education-for-sustainable-development-students-want-more-bu-vision-and-values-highlights-our-ambitions-so-can-we-up-our-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/2015\/12\/10\/education-for-sustainable-development-students-want-more-bu-vision-and-values-highlights-our-ambitions-so-can-we-up-our-game\/","title":{"rendered":"Education for Sustainable Development \u2013 students want more, BU Vision and Values highlights our ambitions, so can we up our game?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The results of the fifth NUS student survey reveal students\u2019 attitudes towards sustainable development: 80% of students said that they want their institutions to be doing more on sustainability, and 60% want to learn more about it.<\/p>\n<p>So are we doing enough at BU and how could we do more?<\/p>\n<p><strong>BU 2018<\/strong> articulates the vision:<\/p>\n<p>We need to be \u201c<em>inspiring our students and staff to enrich the world<\/em>&#8230;\u201d developing\u2026\u201c<em>a holistic approach to SD<\/em>\u201d (p30)&#8230; while also ensuring \u201c<em>our environmental credentials are held in high esteem<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through education, we need to \u201c<em>ensure that graduates develop a global perspective and understand the need for sustainable development by seeking to embed sustainable development across the curriculum<\/em>\u201d (BU 2018; 19)<\/p>\n<p>The commitment is clear but are we doing enough, both within the curriculum and in the extra-curricular sphere? Does your unit consider sustainable development? Are you enabling your students to \u2018<em>make a contribution to the world\u2019<\/em> but falling short in the provision of knowledge and skills for sustainable development?<\/p>\n<p>Further, are we missing opportunities to align \u2018campus-greening\u2019 efforts, and the substantial work led by the Estates team to gain Eco-Campus Platinum accreditation, with students\u2019 learning and engagement? Perhaps our campus could become a \u2018living lab\u2019? Perhaps we could be more creative in fusing academic knowledge with professional practice?<\/p>\n<p>If the aspiration is to graduate influential citizens, who value the world and appreciate that they have a responsibility to sustain it, what should we be considering from an education perspective?<\/p>\n<p>A forthcoming CEL workshop will reflect on some of these questions but in the meantime a little more to ponder on:<\/p>\n<p>Caring for people and planet assumes some affective learning outcomes (values of the heart) &#8211; do we consider affective outcomes (not just cognitive) in our unit specs? What would be the challenges for assessment?<\/p>\n<p>How could we encourage more engagement with \u2018citizenship\u2019 \u2013 democratic processes and community engagement (fusing professional practice, education &amp; research)?<\/p>\n<p>Does your pedagogy:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inspire futures thinking? We want our students to lead transformation in society and be equipped for a future that is uncertain<\/li>\n<li>Help students explore choices in decision making and the risks of alternative course of action, for people and planet, now and in the future?<\/li>\n<li>Enable inter-connections between local\/global and \u2018self\u2019 in relation to \u2018other\u2019 to be explored<\/li>\n<li>Encourage the sharing of diverse perspectives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A lot to think about!
