Cos if you don\u2019t, what the hell are you doing in there in the first place?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This quote comes from a Bournemouth University student participating in our \u201cHow Brilliant are We?\u201d research project, and is one of many quotes, gathered as part of \u00a0the project from both staff and students, \u00a0which \u00a0centre around the passion we have for our work, it appears to be a consistent theme, and our students can spot it when we have it\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The research team \u2013 Susanne Clarke, Lois Farquharson, Bethan Collins and Anita Diaz, were motivated by our curiosity to discover what we could learn from what already works here at BU. This led to us designing our project using an action research approach based on Appreciative Inquiry. Our project drew on existing SUBU <a href=\"http:\/\/www.subu.org.uk\/yourebrilliantawardshttp:\/\/www.subu.org.uk\/yourebrilliantawards\">&#8220;You&#8217;re Brilliant Award&#8221;<\/a> information as base, and used techniques adapted from NHS Scotland&#8217;s \u00a0\u2018 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottishhealthcouncil.org\/patient__public_participation\/participation_toolkit\/emotional_touchpoints.aspx#.Vg1RV7RViko\">Emotional Touchpoints<\/a>\u00a0project.<\/p>\n<p>Over the coming weeks we will share on the CEL Blog findings from our project and insights into <strong>\u201cHow Brilliant Are We?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now getting back to passion (I feel it\u2019s right for this blog post to include love in this category too), here are a more quotes from our staff and students at BU:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c<strong>When the lecturer is passionate, all those other issues go away.<em>\u201d Student.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cYou can identify that a lecturer is doing what they love, because they love the subject, they want to teach others, that comes across and they\u2019re the ones that get the highest attendance and they\u2019re the ones you think about as having a positive experience with.\u201d <strong> Student.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c<\/em><strong><em>And I just love what I do. I get into it and I\u2019m like a sponge.\u00a0\u00a0 So, I\u2019m always looking at what\u2019s going on &#8211; students send me stuff. They say: \u201cOh, have you seen this? I know you are interested\u201d. They feed off that. It helps to engage them.\u201d<\/em> <em>Staff<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIf you\u2019re passionate about what you do, or if you\u2019re passionate about your subject, everything else falls into place.\u201d <strong>Student<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201c<\/em><em>They [the university] were very passionate about what you did (on your placement) and they took a proper interest and when you went back to talk to them they knew about what you had done and wanted to ask you about it.\u201d Student<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIf you\u2019re enthusiastic you\u2019ll come across passionate. If you\u2019re passionate you\u2019ll come across enthusiastic.\u201d <strong> Staff<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c<strong>I am passionate about whatever I teach and I wouldn\u2019t want to teach things that I\u2019m not passionate about and passion goes beyond me, beyond the teaching\u201d Staff<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c<\/em><em>Passion is what drives you through the whole process<\/em><em>.\u201d <\/em><em>Staff<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Drawing passion to a swift close, and \u00a0these really powerful quotes which give us a lot to reflect on! \u00a0We will share more quotes next week and for us in the research team we will be busy thinking of \u201cwhat next\u201d and how we can take this project forward (having already won the best poster prize at the ECRM in Malta 2015). Learning from positive experiences of our staff and students was a highlight for all us involved in this project and we would love to hear any comments or ideas you have.<\/p>\n<p>To finish just a quick summary of our research method and do check our posters in the CEL Room (PG30a) or the Appreciative Inquiry pages of the CEL site. Touchpoints represent the key events or interactions, which form (in this instance) the basis of university life, and the emotional connections associated with these interactions. The events and interactions included: &#8211;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Seminars<\/li>\n<li>Lectures<\/li>\n<li>Advice and Guidance<\/li>\n<li>Careers<\/li>\n<li>Placement<\/li>\n<li>Group Work<\/li>\n<li>Accommodation<\/li>\n<li>Support<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>During the research interview participants were asked to select from a list of emotions (feelings) they most associated with the \u2018Touchpoints\u2019 they selected.
