{"id":14724,"date":"2022-12-14T12:53:38","date_gmt":"2022-12-14T12:53:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/?p=14724"},"modified":"2022-12-14T12:54:59","modified_gmt":"2022-12-14T12:54:59","slug":"360-capture-in-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/2022\/12\/14\/360-capture-in-education\/","title":{"rendered":"360\u00b0 Capture in Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From doorbells to diagnostics the use of 360\u00b0 cameras, panoramic and omnidirectional footage has become commonplace for most people in 2022. \u00a0Even before students embark on their educational journey at here at Bournemouth university, they may be using 360\u00b0 tools and apps such as Google Maps simply to navigate to Bournemouth itself or by exploring the university campuses and its facilities via the online 360\u00b0 campus virtual tour: <a href=\"https:\/\/virtualtour.bournemouth.ac.uk\/\">https:\/\/virtualtour.bournemouth.ac.uk\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The use of 360\u00b0 capture has also significantly increased as a result of the covid pandemic lockdowns where people could investigate the inaccessible by virtually exploring and experiencing digital artefacts in 360\u00b0 online image capture and video. Coming out of the pandemic 360\u00b0 technology has also been used to assist people with social anxieties by allowing them to view and virtually attend public spaces before the need for physical attendance.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2022\/12\/Owl1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14727\" src=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2022\/12\/Owl1.png\" alt=\"Image of someone sat at a desk engaged in an online meeting using the OWL\" width=\"325\" height=\"301\" \/><\/a>\n<p>There is already a plethora of research into the adoption of 360\u00b0 capture in various educational settings.\u00a0 \u2018One captivating aspect of 360\u00b0 is its usage in the classrooms to improve the learning experience of students. This phenomenon has only been in rotation since the last decade. Educators are discovering that when students are provided with such rich, immersive media, they learn better and recall the information with higher successes&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/visuon.com\/s\/history-and-future-of-360vr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">History and Future of 360\/VR<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A study by <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/action\/doSearch?ContribAuthorRaw=Ranieri%2C+Maria\">Maria Ranieri<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/action\/doSearch?ContribAuthorRaw=Luzzi%2C+Damiana\" data-id=\"a2\" data-db-target-for=\"a2\">Damiana Luzzi<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/action\/doSearch?ContribAuthorRaw=Bruni%2C+Isabella\" data-id=\"a3\" data-db-target-for=\"a3\">Isabella Bruni<\/a>Rey et al explore 3 different approaches on using 360\u00b0 video footage in differing educational settings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lecturing<\/strong>: the 360\u00b0 videos are used to represent a traditional transmissive lecture taking place in a typical teaching situation with a focus on the teacher within a formal context such as a classroom or a conference hall.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Modelling<\/strong>: the 360\u00b0 videos are used to show concrete procedures and activities; they generate a powerful sense of space, augmented and enhanced by the opportunity to deeply examine the environment and look at it from all angles, with a high sense of realism, also useful to arouse an emotional reaction.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Exploring<\/strong>: the 360\u00b0 videos can, in principle, bring learners everywhere and make them able to explore any place: natural landscape, internal environment or mixed environment (internal and external). They increase the learners&#8217; control of the learning process, while encouraging curiosity and discovery. <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/jcal.12683?af=R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Link to study<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here in FLIE we have worked on various educational enhancing projects in support of TEL activities to promote the use of simulation in teaching and learning, we have 2 types of 360\u00b0 cameras which we are currently using, the insta360 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta360.com\/\">https:\/\/www.insta360.com\/<\/a> which we have used in student demonstrations as well as co-created academically led projects to produce innovative teaching materials.
