{"id":13126,"date":"2021-11-09T15:25:40","date_gmt":"2021-11-09T15:25:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/?p=13126"},"modified":"2021-11-10T09:50:02","modified_gmt":"2021-11-10T09:50:02","slug":"inclusion-equity-and-social-justice-workshop-summary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/2021\/11\/09\/inclusion-equity-and-social-justice-workshop-summary\/","title":{"rendered":"Inclusion, Equity and Social Justice &#8211; Workshop summary"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"x_OutlineElement x_Ltr x_BCX0 x_SCXW68393411\" data-ogsb=\"rgb(255, 255, 255)\">\n<p class=\"x_Paragraph x_SCXW68393411 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" data-ogsc=\"windowtext\"><span class=\"x_TextRun x_SCXW68393411 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW68393411 x_BCX0\">The second FLIE workshop <\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_TextRun x_SCXW68393411 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW68393411 x_BCX0\">versed on the topic of <a href=\"https:\/\/brightspace.bournemouth.ac.uk\/d2l\/le\/content\/18315\/viewContent\/1516428\/View\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inclusion, Equity and Social Justice.<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-GB\" data-ogsc=\"windowtext\">We had the pleasure of having Chiko Bwalya, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.subu.org.uk\/represented\/liberation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SUBU<\/a> VP Education, joining us and offering some eye-opening insights on inclusion, diversity and decolonisation from a student perspective.<\/p>\n<h2 data-ogsc=\"windowtext\">Race and student perspective<\/h2>\n<p lang=\"EN-GB\" data-ogsc=\"windowtext\">Chiko shared her experience as a student at BU and her concerns around whiteness and Eurocentrism in the curricula.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-GB\" data-ogsc=\"windowtext\">SUBU is currently working on antiracism strategies as well as in incorporating current topics into the curriculum from a perspective that makes sense to the learning experience, such as Black History Month which has been adopted from American history but not adapted into the British one.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-GB\" data-ogsc=\"windowtext\">Chiko also referred to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.keele.ac.uk\/equalitydiversity\/equalityframeworksandactivities\/equalityawardsandreports\/equalityawards\/raceequalitycharter\/keeledecolonisingthecurriculumnetwork\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Keele University\u2019s Decolonizing the Curriculum Manifesto<\/a>, one that defines decolonization of the curriculum as<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p lang=\"EN-GB\" data-ogsc=\"windowtext\">&#8220;creating spaces and resources for a dialogue among all members of the University on how to imagine and envision, all cultures and knowledge systems in the curriculum, with respect to what is being taught and how it frames the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 data-ogsc=\"windowtext\">Gender imbalance<\/h2>\n<p lang=\"EN-GB\" data-ogsc=\"windowtext\">As for gender imbalance, Chiko also had some words of wisdom to share with the audience. &#8220;It is something that we&#8217;re all very privy to&#8221;. Chiko reminded us that the imbalance feeds into the structures of education versus the workforce. Roughly 80% of psychology students are women but the actual professional workspace doesn&#8217;t reflect those numbers. &#8220;We&#8217;re teaching students that this may be an area where a certain agenda dominates this field but that&#8217;s actually not the reality&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p lang=\"EN-GB\" data-ogsc=\"windowtext\">&#8220;We also need to manage expectations but also encourage students that this may be a glass ceiling they need to break through. But we also have the tools to provide students with that understanding and breaking through that space, and we need to make sure that they have access to it throughout their entire academic career.&#8221; (Chiko Bwalya)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 data-ogsc=\"windowtext\">The Equity Compass<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_OutlineElement x_Ltr x_BCX0 x_SCXW68393411\" data-ogsb=\"rgb(255, 255, 255)\">\n<p class=\"x_Paragraph x_SCXW68393411 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" data-ogsc=\"windowtext\"><span class=\"x_TextRun x_SCXW68393411 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW68393411 x_BCX0\"> The \u2018<\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WE4ksRCEoyA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"x_TextRun x_Underlined x_SCXW68393411 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" data-ogsc=\"rgb(5, 99, 193)\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW68393411 x_BCX0\">Equity Compass<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"x_TextRun x_SCXW68393411 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW68393411 x_BCX0\">: a tool for supporting socially just practice\u2019\u00a0is part of a set of resources for reflecting, planning and tracking action that arcs towards equity and social justice. It empowers users to individually\/collectively map where they are at (current practices). It forces dialogue about evidence and planning change in the right direction.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_EOP x_SCXW68393411 x_BCX0\" data-ogsc=\"rgb(24, 60, 85)\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_OutlineElement x_Ltr x_SCXW68393411 x_BCX0\" data-ogsb=\"rgb(255, 255, 255)\">\n<p class=\"x_Paragraph x_SCXW68393411 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" data-ogsc=\"windowtext\"><span class=\"x_TextRun x_SCXW68393411 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" data-ogsc=\"rgb(24, 60, 85)\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW68393411 x_BCX0\">Wouldn\u2019t it be interesting to compare the map on the compass produced by academic and professional staff to one that is produced by our students?
