As we begin a new semester, it seems timely to think about some of the benefits of using rubrics for marking, and sharing rubric marking criteria and feedback with students.<\/p>\n

What is a<\/span><\/b> rubric?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Rubrics are used to evaluate an assignment or activity based on a predefined set of criteria. They help ensure that assignments are evaluated fairly and consistently.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Essentially, a<\/span>\u00a0rubric\u00a0<\/span>provides<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>marking\u00a0<\/span>guide<\/span>lines to<\/span>\u00a0use to evaluate\u00a0<\/span>a piece<\/span>\u00a0of student<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s work\u200b.\u00a0 It can also\u00a0<\/span>further<\/span>\u00a0support\u00a0<\/span>learning by providing students with feedback and feedforward comments where improvements c<\/span>an\u00a0<\/span>been made.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The majority of assig<\/span>n<\/span>ments will be submitted via Turnitin<\/span>\u00a0so most staff will use<\/span>\u00a0Turnitin<\/span>\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>inbuilt\u00a0<\/span>rubric tool.\u00a0<\/span>For large or multiple file submissions you can use<\/span>\u00a0B<\/span>rightspace\u2019s rubric tool.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200b<\/span><\/b>What are the<\/span><\/b> benefits for\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Staff<\/span><\/b>?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

R<\/span>ubric<\/span>s work well<\/span> when you have a large cohort of students, as they allow for consistent, objective, and <\/span>efficient<\/span>\u00a0assessing of work\u200b.\u00a0 You\u00a0<\/span>can<\/span>\u00a0u<\/span>tili<\/span>se<\/span>\u00a0the BU<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>generic<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>assessment criteria\u00a0<\/span>for each<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>level, or\u00a0mak<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0a copy of these\u00a0<\/span>templates<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span> edit and refine them to create a <\/span>rubric\u00a0<\/span>more specific to your assessment. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A rubric can also be set up <\/span>with\u00a0<\/span>weightings<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>allow<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0the system to\u00a0<\/span>provide<\/span>\u00a0an estimated grade, based on the scale setting you have applied when marking\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span> piece of work.\u00a0 Note that the final grade awarded will <\/span>still be <\/span>your decision.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200b<\/span>What are the<\/span><\/b>\u00a0benefits\u00a0for students?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Rubrics can be shared with students prior to the<\/span>ir assignment submission<\/span>, so that they can use them as a guide to the <\/span>objectives that need to be met for their assessment and so help them achieve a good grade.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After work has been marked and grades and feedback released<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the completed rubric can be shared with<\/span>\u00a0student<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>so they<\/span>\u00a0have transparency of<\/span> the <\/span>marking and can easily view their feedback and feedforward<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
