He\u00a0outlined\u00a0the \u2018VUCA\u2019 realities of today (Volatility,\u00a0Uncertainty, Ambiguity\u00a0an\u00a0Complexity), suggesting\u00a0a\u00a0Cyber-Physcial\u00a0model of learning where on site communities moved through stages of learn;\u00a0master;\u00a0communicate\u00a0to\u00a0a\u00a0model of\u00a0online open community.\u00a0The Brave New University needs to move beyond the model to innovation and mixed\u00a0realities, multi-modal interaction, mixed\u00a0social\u00a0networks. Spaced\u00a0repetition\u00a0and exams and from\u00a0traditional\u00a0programming of courses to mixed and adapting,\u00a0with a\u00a0truly\u00a0student-centred\u00a0focus.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\">\n<div id=\"attachment_11384\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11384\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11384\" src=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2020\/07\/IMG_5988-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2020\/07\/IMG_5988-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2020\/07\/IMG_5988.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11384\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brave new classroom<\/p><\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-969\" src=\"http:\/\/drdebbieholley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_5988.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Our session, \u2018A\u00a0humanising\u00a0response\u00a0to\u00a0scaling at speed\u2019 (Debbie Holley, Ian Donaldson and John Moran)\u00a0explored the work the Department\u00a0of Nursing\u00a0Sciences\u00a0undertook to scale at speed as\u00a0third\u00a0year Nursing Students\u00a0prepared to undertake their final six months In practice, called up by the NHS to work to support the\u00a0Covid-19pandemic. Drawing upon\u00a0the work of\u00a0Len\u00a0Vygotsky, we scaffolded support using\u00a0technology as the\u00a0proxy for the \u2018more capable peer\u2019 (Cook 2010) .\u00a0This body of work\u00a0reflects\u00a0the\u00a0humanising\u00a0value-set and community of\u00a0practice\u00a0approaches\u00a0that underpin the whole of the Nursing\u00a0Curriculum. We co-produced\u00a0a \u2018Corona Virus\u00a0Teachinar\u2019 Unit to host podcasts,\u00a0tech chat show recordings, guest slots from experts, and created a \u2018Digital Nurse\u2019 Talis Aspire reading\u00a0list\u00a0to model the\u00a0importance\u00a0of\u00a0exemplary\u00a0online reading lists to complement moving\u00a0our\u00a0practices\u00a0online.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-slideshare wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-slideshare wp-embed-aspect-1-1 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div><strong><a title=\"A humansing response to scaling at speed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/debbieholley1\/a-humansing-response-to-scaling-at-speed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A humansing response to scaling at speed<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>from\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/debbieholley1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">debbieholley1<\/a><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Next,\u00a0Sandra Lusk presented the UCL work on\u00a0students experiences of the pandemic,\u00a0emphasising\u00a0the key need to ensure access to the online \u2013 we all echoed the\u00a0examples\u00a0shared of students, and staff,\u00a0disadvantaged due to\u00a0unreliable\u00a0technology, lack of study space, poor internet access, and good learning\u00a0design,\u00a0thought through\u00a0to meet the need\u00a0of all is\u00a0essential\u00a0moving forward.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-11383\" src=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2020\/07\/IMG_5994-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2020\/07\/IMG_5994-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2020\/07\/IMG_5994.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption>Sandra Lusk and the student experience<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Allison Littlejohn and Eileen Kennedy then\u00a0presented\u00a0on \u2018The\u00a0Challenges\u00a0and\u00a0Opportunities\u00a0of the Rapid Move to Online teaching in Response to Covid-19\u2032, once again highlighting\u00a0inequalities, gender issues and\u00a0the over\u00a0reliance\u00a0on live video conference\u00a0platforms\u00a0making\u00a0teaching\u00a0difficult\u00a0and stressful with limited student\u00a0engagement.\u00a0Their\u00a0recommendations:<\/p>\n<p>Five key conclusions and recommendations from their research:<\/p>\n<p>1. Support for online teaching and learning in the new academic year should focus on learning design that shifts the emphasis away from tutor presentation via video (Zoom\u00a0etc)<\/p>\n<p>2. Pedagogical support should be provided for ways of synchronous interaction and engagement with students<\/p>\n<p>3. Learning design support should be provided for asynchronous student discussion and collaborative activity<\/p>\n<p>4. Online short and flexible\u00a0ie\u00a0Just in Time professional development should be provided to allow tutors to gain first-hand experience of learning design and the use of tools to engage students<\/p>\n<p>5. Ensure staff have sufficient time to develop their courses since development for online learning and teaching is heavily front loaded<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-975\" src=\"http:\/\/drdebbieholley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_6003.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>The always welcome JISC session saw Sarah Knight and Clare Killen discussed\u00a0digital onboarding\u00a0issues, and\u00a0highlighted\u00a0the\u00a0importance\u00a0of a\u00a0joined up\u00a0institutional\u00a0approach.
