{"id":10110,"date":"2019-03-18T09:00:46","date_gmt":"2019-03-18T09:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/cel\/?p=10110"},"modified":"2019-03-13T09:03:26","modified_gmt":"2019-03-13T09:03:26","slug":"sharing-practice-the-instructional-design-team-at-solent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/2019\/03\/18\/sharing-practice-the-instructional-design-team-at-solent\/","title":{"rendered":"Sharing practice: the instructional design team at Solent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In January I visited Dr Carina Buckley and her Instructional Design team at Southampton Solent University.\u00a0 It was a great chance to see how a similar team to our own was approaching TEL in HE and if there was any best practice we could share. Their \u2018SOL Baseline\u2019 to guide their academics in the philosophy of how they should be utilising their VLE has parallels with the materials we produce here at BU.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After seeing some of the projects they were working on in their VLE SOL (Moodle) and showcasing some of the things we\u2019ve been doing in Brightspace (such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/brightspace.bournemouth.ac.uk\/d2l\/home\/18315\">staff resource area<\/a>) it was obvious we shared similar concerns on how our VLEs were being utilised by academic staff to complement their teaching.\u00a0 One of the tools they are currently piloting is <a href=\"https:\/\/h5p.org\/\">H5P<\/a>, which makes creating HTML content (the programming language of the web) a lot more streamlined and user friendly without the need to know how to code.\u00a0 They were currently piloting it on a pre-arrival page to help students from different vocational and educational backgrounds to start the course at a similar level.\u00a0 Further information about their use of H5P in the pre-arrival course can be found on their blog post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solent.ac.uk\/staff\/learning-and-teaching\/blog\/2019\/showcase-nursing-pre-arrival\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During lunch Carina and her team were hosting a live webcast called Digital Capabilities: Thrive in a connected world.\u00a0 It was a great chance for them to advertise the type of work their team were doing including the use of H5P and their digital partners scheme and I was invited to be part of the broadcasting panel.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2019\/03\/SOL_Webcast.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10111 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2019\/03\/SOL_Webcast-1024x544.png\" alt=\"Digital Capabilities: Thrive in a connected world webcast\" width=\"1024\" height=\"544\" srcset=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2019\/03\/SOL_Webcast-1024x544.png 1024w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2019\/03\/SOL_Webcast-300x159.png 300w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2019\/03\/SOL_Webcast-768x408.png 768w, https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/files\/2019\/03\/SOL_Webcast.png 1281w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The webcast recording is available on YouTube <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KfzFDRRPmAw&amp;feature=youtu.be\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Overall it was a very useful day seeing how another university is tackling similar issues to ourselves and learning about the tools and methods they are using to combat them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Scott Hedger<\/p>\n<p>TEL Developer<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In January I visited Dr Carina Buckley and her Instructional Design team at Southampton Solent University.\u00a0 It was a great chance to see how a similar team to our own was approaching TEL in HE and if there was any best practice we could share.
