{"id":10103,"date":"2019-03-12T15:32:11","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T15:32:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/cel\/?p=10103"},"modified":"2019-03-12T15:57:18","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T15:57:18","slug":"what-did-learning-technologists-think-of-using-virtual-reality-with-nursing-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/flie\/2019\/03\/12\/what-did-learning-technologists-think-of-using-virtual-reality-with-nursing-students\/","title":{"rendered":"What did Learning Technologists think of using Virtual Reality with Nursing Students?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This academic year, three CEL Learning Technologists (LTs) have supported four Virtual Reality Deteriorating Patient sessions with Second Year Adult and Mental Health Nursing Students at BU.\u00a0 Two further LTs were invited to join in with the sessions so that they could learn how to support similar teaching and learning activities in the future (to find out more about the project, please watch the video at the end of this post).<\/p>\n<p>All five LTs agreed to take part in a focus group and were asked the following three questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What do you think went well today?<\/li>\n<li>What challenges were there?<\/li>\n<li>How could we use this in the future?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This valuable feedback from \u201cthe front line\u201d will be invaluable in shaping future teaching and learning in HSS at BU. This is a summary of their responses:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"472\"><strong>Advantages<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"473\"><strong>Challenges<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"473\"><strong>Future Developments<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"472\"><strong>\u201cMost enjoyed it\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cMost students knew what to do.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cLots of students found it intuitive and easy to use.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt was quick to work through the exercise.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe phone version is even easier to load and use.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThere are lots of positives surrounding student engagement and how students learn in different ways.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c The fact students can use the exercises anywhere is great.\u201d<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"473\"><strong>\u201cOne felt they were not good with computers so didn\u2019t like it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cSome struggled to download the software, especially using Macbooks.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIf students progressed through in a way we did not expect there was a pathway that didn\u2019t work and they had to start over.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWith phones you could get the same issues of the variety of versions of software used.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe need to be confident that all students can access it, if we set it as a home learning task.\u201d<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"473\"><strong>\u201cYou could demonstrate how to download the software in an earlier session to save time.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cStudents could be given the chance to work through the tutorial in an earlier session, then they can focus on the diabetes exercise more easily.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cYou could consider using the PC labs with pre-loaded software.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cText in pop up boxes could be clearer.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cA choice about whether to use mouse or keyboard would be a good enhancement.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cOnce we get multiple scenarios, the initial effort to learn how to use it will be more than worth it.\u201d<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AKpw1RbZ1hA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
