Digital media transformation conference: academia meets professional practice

More than 100 academics and media professionals attended the European Media Management Association’s annual conference in Bournemouth June, which CMC’s Dr John Oliver organised.

“I wanted to provide a platform for both academics and industry professionals to engage in a debate about how digital media had transformed the nature of the Media Industry,” said John of the ‘Digital Transformations and Transactions’ conference. And that he did, as the event attracted leading academics from Harvard University and the Media Management Transformation Centre in Sweden together with Jeff Dodds, Chief Marketing Officer at Virgin Media; Steve North, General Manager at UKTV; and Chris Davenport, a Senior Executive at business transformation specialists, The Hackett Group.

John went on to say that the Media Industry is changing  rapidly and “this conference examined the transformation in media firms, audiences, regulation and business models that had occurred as a result of the emergence of the digital new media environment ”.

However, it was not all work and no play. BU Sports arranged a football match for some of the delegates, which ended BU 6 – EU 6 whilst other delegates sipped Pimms and played croquet!
