{"id":8270,"date":"2025-04-09T12:08:38","date_gmt":"2025-04-09T12:08:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/cippm\/?p=8270"},"modified":"2025-04-01T12:09:14","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T12:09:14","slug":"deepfake-and-the-law-stakeholder-roundtable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/cippm\/2025\/04\/09\/deepfake-and-the-law-stakeholder-roundtable\/","title":{"rendered":"Deepfake and the law: stakeholder roundtable"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On <strong>9th April 2025,<\/strong> CIPPM will host a stakeholder roundtable on &#8216;deepfake and the law&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>The event follows on from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rclip.jp\/en\/events\/deepfake-roundtable\">stakeholder roundtable<\/a> which was hosted at Waseda University Tokyo on 16 December 2024 and forms part of the project funded by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/chrome-extension\/\/efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj\/https:\/\/dajf.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/March-2024-Approved-Grants-List.pdf\">Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation<\/a>\u00a0to carry out research into deepfake technology and the law.<\/p>\n<p>The project, carried out in collaboration with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abdn.ac.uk\/people\/rossana.ducato\"><strong>Dr Rossana Ducato<\/strong><\/a> (University of Aberdeen) and <a href=\"https:\/\/uenot.w.waseda.jp\/index_e.html\"><strong>Professor Tatsuhiro Ueno<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(Waseda University, Tokyo) explores the impact of deepfake technology on intellectual property, data protection, privacy and fraud laws and does so from the perspective of UK and Japan.<\/p>\n<p>Deepfake AI is used to create convincing images, audio, video hoaxes and is a portmanteau of \u2018deep learning\u2019 and \u2018fake\u2019. Although the technology is advancing rapidly, it remains heavily unexplored from a policy and legal perspective. There have been initiatives in UK and Japan to address the challenges raised by this technology, however there is still a long way to go. Specific regulation in the area is currently absent in both countries.<\/p>\n<p>The main objective of this research is to explore deepfake technology and the legal implications for UK and Japan, with a particular focus on copyright, data protection, privacy and fraud law. The project will consider the law and technology relating to deepfakes, in collaboration with a range of stakeholders drawn from UK and Japan in an attempt to understand the issues more deeply and to identify the way forward.<\/p>\n<p>The stakeholder roundtable, which coincides with <a href=\"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/cippm\/2025\/01\/17\/cippm-celebrates-25-years-in-2025\/\">CIPPM&#8217;s 25th anniversary celebrations<\/a>, will bring together stakeholders from the technology, creative, policy, practice and academic sectors.
