Mendis &#8211; Are You Ready For Your Child, The 3D Printing Genius?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On <strong>Wednesday 10 July 2013<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/staffprofiles.bournemouth.ac.uk\/display\/dmendis\">CIPPM Co-Director, Dr. Dinusha Mendis<\/a> was invited to publish an article for <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/uk\">The Conversation<\/a>. The article focused on 3D printing for the next generation of children. The article titled \u2018<em>Are you ready for your child, the 3D Printing genius?\u2019<\/em> responded to Education Minister Michael Gove\u2019s pledge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/speeches\/education-reform-schools\">this week<\/a> to modernise design and technology in Schools in England. This is thought to include introducing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theengineer.co.uk\/channels\/skills-and-careers\/news\/new-curriculum-brings-3d-printers-to-technology-lessons\/1016659.article\">3D printers into schools<\/a> to help the next generation of children become creators rather than users.<\/p>\n<p>The article stressed that whilst Gove\u2019s enthusiasm for new technologies should be applauded the importance of regulating 3D printing should not be underestimated. \u2018It is important to introduce students to the regulation of 3D printing as it is to give them the equipment they need to carry it out\u2019 Dr. Mendis said. Dr. Mendis also pointed out that whilst adopting this technology, the future generation should also be educated and made aware of the regulatory and legislative challenges which come with new technologies.<\/p>\n<p>Gove\u2019s statement in Parliament came at the same time as high-street retailer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maplin.co.uk\/3d-printer\">Maplin<\/a> announced its plans to sell <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/gadgets-and-tech\/uks-first-commercial-3d-printer-on-sale-in-maplin-for-69999-8697332.html\">3D printers to the public for just under \u00a3700<\/a>. It\u2019s clear that this technology is very much on its way to being embraced by the general public.
