In January 2015, Dr. Dinusha Mendis, Associate Professor in Law and Co-Director of the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy and Management (CIPPM)<\/a> in the Faculty of Media and Communications was awarded a period of research leave funded by the Fusion Investment Fund which commenced on 1 January 2015. The study leave was\u00a0granted to further Dr. Mendis\u2019 research into the digital aspects of\u00a0Copyright Law<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Intellectual Property (IP) Implications of 3D Printing<\/a>.<\/p>\n

During this time\u00a0Dr. Mendis held appointments as Lord Provost Fellow at University of Tasmania<\/a> in Australia and\u00a0as a Visiting Scholar at\u00a0Stanford Law School<\/a>,\u00a0Stanford University<\/a>\u00a0California.<\/p>\n

Dr. Mendis also engaged in collaboration with Art, Science and Knowledge (ASK) Centre<\/a>, University of Bocconi<\/a> in Italy during this time.<\/p>\n

From February – April, Dr. Mendis collaborated with researchers at\u00a0the University of Tasmania (UTAS), Australia in the capacity of\u00a0Lord Provost Fellow. In particular, Dr. Mendis worked with\u00a0Professor Dianne Nicol<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Dr. Jane Nielsen<\/a>\u00a0of the Faculty of Law, UTAS. The collaboration work involved considering the IP implications of 3D Printing.<\/p>\n

The time was also\u00a0utilised to collaborate with colleagues at Melbourne University, Monash University and Swinburne University of Technology where Dr. Mendis was\u00a0invited to present her recent research<\/a>, which she carried out for the\u00a0UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO)<\/a>. The presentation formed part of the \u2018Innovation Seminar Series\u2019, organised by the\u00a0Centre for Transformative Innovation<\/a>\u00a0at Swinburne University of Technology.<\/p>\n

Dr. Mendis was also\u00a0invited to present her research at a Staff Seminar at UTAS<\/a>, in her capacity as Visiting Fellow and was invited by IP Australia<\/a> to present on the research findings of the UKIPO Commissioned Project. Dr. Mendis’ final appointment was at\u00a0Stanford Law School<\/a>, Stanford University<\/a> California.<\/p>\n

During her time as a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University, Dr. Mendis was involved in working with Professor Mark Lemley<\/a> of Stanford Law School, to further her research into the intellectual property implications of 3D printing. Sponsored by Professor Lemley, Dr. Mendis utilised the time at Stanford to complete two research papers (to be published) and collaborate with IP experts from University of California, Berkeley<\/a>; Emory University<\/a>; Georgia Tech University<\/a> and Indiana University<\/a> in taking forward a project in the area of 3D printing and intellectual property implications.<\/p>\n

The appointments have all proved to be very productive and rewarding in taking forward the research on the IP implications of 3D printing as well as research into various aspects in copyright law.<\/p>\n
