{"id":3964,"date":"2015-09-05T07:11:10","date_gmt":"2015-09-05T07:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/cippm\/?p=3964"},"modified":"2015-10-21T15:41:38","modified_gmt":"2015-10-21T15:41:38","slug":"cippm-researchers-present-at-the-european-policy-for-intellectual-property-epip-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/cippm\/2015\/09\/05\/cippm-researchers-present-at-the-european-policy-for-intellectual-property-epip-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"CIPPM Researchers Present at the European Policy for Intellectual Property (EPIP) Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 10th Annual Conference of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.epip.eu\" target=\"_blank\">European Policy for Intellectual Property (EPIP)<\/a>\u00a0was hosted by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.create.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">CREATe<\/a>, the RCUK Centre for Copyright and New Business Models in the Creative Economy at the University of Glasgow, on 2 and 3 September 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Opening the conference in the beautiful setting of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/3\/38\/Glasgow_University_Chapel%2C_Sept._2010_-_Flickr_-_PhillipC.jpg\">Chapel<\/a>, Professor Ian Hargreaves, Professor of Digital Economy and the author of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk\/20140603093549\/http:\/\/www.ipo.gov.uk\/ipreview\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Digital Opportunity: A Review of IP and Growth\u2019\u00a0<\/a>delivered the keynote speech on \u2018Copyright Wars: Frozen Conflict\u2019 to which a thought-provoking response was delivered by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/meps\/en\/124816\/JULIA_REDA_home.html\" target=\"_blank\">MEP, Julia Reda<\/a> (Greens\/EFA Group\/Pirate Party). The video of the keynote including the transcript and MEP Julia Reda&#8217;s response is available\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.epip2015.org\/transcript-video-epip2015-opening-keynote-ian-hargreaves-response-julia-reda\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A blog post authored by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gla.ac.uk\/schools\/law\/staff\/kristofererickson\/\" target=\"_blank\">CREATe Research Fellow, Dr. Kristofer Erickson<\/a>\u00a0capturing the essence of the keynote\/response can be found\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.create.ac.uk\/blog\/2015\/09\/16\/ian-hargreaves-and-julia-reda-on-copyright-reform-can-incremental-progress-achieve-results\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. The blog post\u00a0argues that\u00a0researchers should critically examine the strategy of incremental change by generating and analysing empirical data about the effectiveness of recently introduced incremental reforms.<\/p>\n<p>During the 2-days, a number of CIPPM Researchers including <a href=\"http:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/cippm\/2014\/02\/19\/maurizio-borghi\/\">Maurizio Borgh<\/a><u>i<\/u>, <a href=\"http:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/cippm\/2014\/04\/30\/ruth-towse\/\">Ruth Towse<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/cippm\/2014\/04\/23\/dinusha-mendis\/\">Dinusha Mendis<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/cippm\/2014\/05\/13\/marcella-favale\/\">Marcella Favale<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/cippm\/2014\/05\/13\/sally-weston\/\">Sally Weston<\/a> attended and presented at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epip2015.org\/programme\/\" target=\"_blank\">conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marcella Favale<\/strong> presented her paper co-authored with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gla.ac.uk\/schools\/law\/staff\/martinkretschmer\/\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Kretschmer<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nottingham.ac.uk\/law\/people\/paul.torremans\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Torremans<\/a>\u00a0<em>Is There a EU Copyright Jurisprudence? An empirical analysis of the workings of the European Court of Justice.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ruth Towse<\/strong> presented her paper on\u00a0<em>Copyright and business models in music publishing: the law and the market<\/em>\u00a0(as part of the AHRC-funded project\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/cippm\/2014\/06\/13\/evolution-of-the-music-publishing-industry\/\">Evolution in Music Publishing<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maurizio Borghi<\/strong> presented on\u00a0<em>Crowdsourcing the orphan works problem<\/em>\u00a0(as part of the recently funded\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/cippm\/2015\/06\/02\/endow\/\">EnDOW project<\/a>). The EnDOW Project is led by CIPPM and carried out in partnership with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.create.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\">CREATe<\/a>, University of Glasgow,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ask.unibocconi.it\/wps\/wcm\/connect\/Cdr\/Centro_ASK\/Home\/\" target=\"_blank\">ASK,<\/a>\u00a0University of Bocconi and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ivir.nl\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">IViR<\/a>, University of Amsterdam.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sally Weston<\/strong> presented on\u00a0<em>Encouraging interoperability by the sharing of interface information obtained by reverse engineering &#8211;\u00a0<\/em>as part of the research carried out for her PhD project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dinusha Mendis<\/strong> presented and led a panel on\u00a0<em>A<\/em>\u00a0<em>Legal and Empirical Study into the Intellectual Property Implications of 3D Printing \u2013 Conclusions and Recommendations\u00a0<\/em>(as part of a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/microsites.bournemouth.ac.uk\/cippm\/2014\/05\/19\/the-provision-of-research-for-3d-printing-and-intellectual-property-where-are-we-now\/\">project commissioned and funded by the UK Intellectual Property Office<\/a>). The other panel members who also contributed to the commissioned project and presented on the Panel included\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/southerndenmark.academia.edu\/DavideSecchi\/Followers\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Davide Secchi<\/a>\u00a0(University of Southern Denmark),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stratasys.com\/solutions\/strategic-consulting\/our-people\" target=\"_blank\">Ms. Sophie Jones<\/a>\u00a0(Stratasys Strategic Consulting) and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.managingip.com\/Article\/3486944\/Interview-Pippa-Hall-chief-economist-UK-IPO.html\" target=\"_blank\">Ms. Pippa Hall of the UK Intellectual Property Office<\/a>\u00a0who spoke about next steps in relation to policy and reform in the area of 3D printing and IP Law.<\/p>\n<p>In the same manner that the Conference commenced, the 2-day Conference was brought to a close by an equally excellent closing keynote speech by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.berkeley.edu\/php-programs\/faculty\/facultyProfile.php?facID=346\" target=\"_blank\">Professor Pamuela Samuelson, Richard M. Sherman Distinguished Professor of Law from Berkeley Law School<\/a>. The closing keynote can be found\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.berkeley.edu\/php-programs\/faculty\/facultyProfile.php?facID=346\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. \u00a0Professor Samuelson spoke about the challenges and opportunities brought about evidence-based IP policy and concluded her keynote and the Conference by stating: &#8220;I think that evidence based IP policy is a theme worth pursuing. It\u2019s not always going to win but it gives this community something useful to debate and to offer to policy makers.
