As part of the\u00a0Economic and Social Research Council\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0Festival of Social Science 2014<\/a>, the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy and Management<\/a>, Bournemouth University, brought together experts in a variety of fields to kick-start a new debate about the intellectual property implications of 3D printing.<\/p>\n\"8-14911Festival-banner\"\n

Introducing the event,\u00a0Sally Weston<\/a>, Head of Law at BU said \u201c3D printing is a technology which could change the world.\u00a0 It is advancing rapidly and is now used to create items as detailed as aircraft parts.\u00a0 It is a hugely exciting area.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although 3D printing as a technology has existed for more than thirty years, the advent of consumer 3D printing has the potential to rapidly advance its use.\u00a0 By becoming more widely available, it opens up the possibility for early adopters and enthusiasts to be involved in shaping its future uses.\u00a0 It also means that businesses have an opportunity to develop new and exciting content for a wider consumer market.<\/p>\n

As Event Organiser,\u00a0Dinusha Mendis<\/a>, Associate Professor of Law at BU, explained, \u201c3D printing is a technology which has the potential to revolutionise our lives.\u00a0 While the technology has existed for some time, consumer 3D printing is set to transform the way it is used.\u201d<\/p>\n

The event was complemented by an exhibition of 3D printers provided by Bournemouth University and\u00a0Ultimaker<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 one of the world\u2019s largest 3D printing companies and Winner of Best Consumer Product and Best Consumer Software at the\u00a02014 3D Print Show Global Awards<\/a>. Seeing 3D printers at work allowed the delegates to get hands-on experience while exploring its potential uses and adoption.<\/p>\n

However this emerging technology also raises questions about the broader implications relating to intellectual property (IP) law, economics, policy, technology, industry and society.\u00a0 If an item is printed at home, who is responsible for ensuring its quality?\u00a0 Will it change the way business models operate?\u00a0 What will it mean for copyright and intellectual property law?\u00a0 Presentations from a series of experts in both industry and research tackled these issues and more over the course of the day.<\/p>\n

The highly engaged responses from audience members illustrated exactly why a debate about the implications of 3D printing is necessary.\u00a0 Many of those attending had professional or personal experiences which they were keen to share and debate with both panellists and other delegates. The day concluded with a discussion of the\u00a0UK Intellectual Property Office (UK IPO)<\/a>\u00a0commissioned Project on the IP implications of 3D\u00a0 Printing carried out by Dr. Dinusha Mendis (Principal Investigator);\u00a0Dr. Davide Secchi<\/a>\u00a0(Co-Investigator) of BU in collaboration with\u00a0Dr. Phil Reeves\u00a0<\/a>(Co-investigator) of\u00a0Econolyst<\/a>.<\/p>\n

By bringing together a wide range of stakeholders presenting their various perspectives, BU has started a very timely and much needed discussion about the future of 3D printing.<\/p>\n

The tweets from the day were captured on\u00a0Storify<\/a>\u00a0and represent parts of the discussion and debate.\u00a0 The event was publicised through a\u00a0press release<\/a>\u00a0from the Economic and Social Research Council \u2013 one of only a small number of events to be chosen by the ESRC.<\/p>\n
