Can AI be a fair judge in court?

Estonia has been adopting AI (Artificial intelligence) for many applications; algorithms assessing satellite images and determining when fields need cutting, matching the skills of unemployed workers with employers and, in their latest ambitious project, an AI judge to adjudicate small claims disputes. This may be the first attempt to give an algorithm decision-making authority in law, driven by Estonia’s Chief Data Officer Ott Velsberg, a 28-year old PhD student who is writing a thesis on the Internet of Things and sensor data in government services. The Estonian government also has an AI task force that is due to report on an additional 35 AI-related demonstration projects by 2020.
