HEA Student Surveys

HEA student surveys are important tools for understanding how students experience their higher education courses, such as how engaged they feel by the teaching and how supported they are in their learning and development. In 2016-17, we’re running all three student surveys. Partnership with i-Graduate

Meanwhile a new partnership between the HEA and i-graduate will enable higher education institutions outside of the UK to take part in our highly-respected postgraduate surveys, the Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) and Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES). The move will align these surveys with i-graduate’s flagship International Student Barometer (ISB), implemented by over 1,400 institutions across 33 countries. More details

PTES and UKES webinars

Our free lunchtime research webinars offer the opportunity to come together to debate critical issues in HE learning and teaching. In on our forthcoming PTES and United Kingdom Engagement Survey (UKES) webinars, Jason Leman (HEA Surveys Officer) and Jonathan Neves (Head of Surveys at the HEA) will discuss the results from the 2016 PTES and UKES surveys on 17 October and 7 November respectively. Training & Events for HE learning professionals

To help prepare your staff for the new academic year the HEA has developed a series of training and event opportunities specific to their needs. You will find something of interest in our Training and Events programme, from one-day workshops, communities of practice and conferences to a brand new set of online engagement opportunities. They each support different sector priorities such as student success, assessment, employability, retention, HEA Surveys and our work surrounding the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). Coaching for Senior Executives 2016-17

Coaching for Senior Executives is a coaching offer for those responsible for leading the teaching and learning agenda within their institutions. The coaching will typically take place over a period of three to six months involving 6 sessions, ideally face to face or via Skype if participants are unable to attend in person. Available from September 2016, dates will be arranged to suit individual participants. Find out more

Executive Development Programme 2017

Bookings are now open for our acclaimed Executive Development Programme, starting in April 2017. This year-long programme is aimed at leaders of learning, teaching and the student academic experience who wish to enhance their leadership capacity and consolidate their understanding of the dynamic higher education landscape. In a recent HEA blog, Jonathan Eaton, Head of Learning and Teaching Enhancement at Teesside University talks about how the programme raised his confidence professionally and extended his knowledge of the wider HE policy landscape, while Professor Helen O’Sullivan of the University of Liverpool explains how the programme has benefitted her professionally in many ways. Deans’ Development Programme 2017

New for 2017, our Deans’ Development Programme (starting in May 2017) is designed to support those in faculty leadership roles and is of particular value to new or aspiring Deans, Associate Deans and Heads of Department. Preregister here

Leading Transformation in Learning and Teaching (LTLT) 2016-17

The LTLT programme has been developed by HEA and the Leadership Foundation to enhance the skills, approaches and insights needed to lead course and programme teams through processes of transformation and innovation. It is aimed at staff interested in curriculum design and the transformation of learning and teaching within your institutions, faculties and departments. Teaching Excellence Programme 2017

The Teaching Excellence Programme (starting 13th January 2017) supports, develops and inspires excellence in teaching, in turn transforming the learning experience of students. The programme uses a series of masterclasses and action learning sets to bring together theory, knowledge from the sector and practical ideas for change that can be applied to participants’ practice. Peer learning and sharing of solutions fosters a community of practice amongst participants. For bookings and more information

PVC Network event, November 2016

The Pro-Vice-Chancellors, Vice-Chancellors and Deputy-Vice-Chancellors (PVC Network) is a unique forum that meets twice a year to share successful strategies for enhancing HE teaching and learning. HEA Annual Conference, July 2017

Our Annual Conference is returning in 2017. Generation TEF: Teaching in the spotlight, takes place 4-6 July 2017 at the University of Manchester. The new format for the Annual Conference includes a day dedicated to addressing sector priorities, such as retention, assessment and employability, with two days either side of discipline-led activities where the sharing of teaching methods and ideas across disciplines will feature significantly. HEA STEM Conference, February 2017

The HEA is delighted to announce the return of the HEA STEM Conference 2017 (taking place in Manchester on 1 February 2017), Achieving Excellence in STEM Teaching and Learning. In 2016, over 86% of our STEM conference delegates said that the conference would help support them to improve student learning outcomes, with more than 90% either satisfied or very satisfied with the event. We’re currently inviting proposals (deadline 7 October) from higher education professionals within STEM disciplines that relate to this year’s chosen themes. More information here

Transforming teaching, inspiring learning worldwide

Over the summer, the HEA has been busy not just in the UK but across the world, including carrying out innovative pedagogies and curriculum design workshops in China, cultivating ever closer relationships with a range of institutions across Australia and New Zealand, supporting staff development in Bahrain and awarding Principal Fellowship to an academic in Saudi Arabia. The HEA’s response to the TEF Technical Consultation

The HEA has submitted its response to the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) technical consultation. Throughout the process, we have worked very closely with our PVC Network and others, including Principal Fellows of the HEA, to help to inform our response and to influence the shape of the TEF.
