Graduate elected to CIM regional board

28 year old Leisure Marketing graduate Simon Hood has been elected on to the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) South East regional board.

Simon, who is Head of Marketing for leading relocation specialist HCR, will help steer the direction of the CIM’s South East chapter covering Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Solent and the Thames Valley.

The Chartered Institute of Marketing has twelve Regional Boards within the British Isles, each comprising of nine elected members. Simon commented: “The CIM’s South East region is one of the most diverse regions in the UK, stretching from Thanet in the southeast and the New Forest in the southwest, up to Aylesbury Vale and Milton Keynes in the northwest of the region. I am very excited about the opportunity to support the work of the CIM and to help provide a means by which all members have the opportunity to participate and be involved at local level.

“I am also actively seeking to improve the Institute’s engagement with the new generation of marketers by increasing the online presence of the group as well as improving the perception of the CIM among forward-thinking modern employers.”

Simon, who graduated from Bournemouth University in 2009, continues to show his entrepreneurial spirit; just last year, he independently launched the White Cliffs Business Awards, an awards scheme showcasing local business success within southeast Kent. The first awards ceremony took place in March 2012 and had over 120 business leaders in attendance and later this year will be the staging the first ever White Cliffs Business Summit.

Simon also helped to launch Texas Ask’Em Poker – a novel, fun poker app and Facebook game combining trivia with Texas hold’em poker. As part of the launch Simon implemented a sponsorship deal which resulted in the Texas Ask’Em Poker brand being broadcast around the globe via Sky Sports.

Markers wanted for Student Development Awards

Help give BU students an edge – support our Student Development Award.

The Student Development Award initiative gives students a way to showcase their accomplishments and be rewarded for taking part in a wide choice of extra-curricular activities.

A choice of over 100 employability-enhancing activities is available, ranging from mentoring fellow students or being a student ambassador, to learning a language or a new skill, or being active in a sports team or music group. While doing this, students accumulate points, attend workshops and produce an e-portfolio for formal assessment.

We are currently looking for helpers to mark the students’ e-portfolios. This involves marking up to five portfolios during April 2013 and can be done at any time of day, either at home or on-campus if you prefer.

Full training is available with on-going support face-to-face, by telephone and by email.

This would be a voluntary role and as a thank-you, you would be invited to the award ceremony on the evening of Thursday 9 May, to meet the students as they receive their awards as well as meeting staff and supporters.

We would really appreciate your support in making this great scheme a success.

Occupational Therapy graduate focus group

What do you think will be required of the Occupational Therapy graduate of the future? We want your views!

Bournemouth University would like to invite Occupational Therapy graduates to attend a focus group on Wednesday 6 February 2013, to share views on what you think will be required of the 2020 occupational therapy graduate. This is part of our consultation for our 2014 programme reapproval.

Our most recent cohort suggested that an evening would probably be easier so we propose a brief get together with staff from 5.30pm with the focus group due to start at 6pm (lasting for a couple of hours). This will take place in Bournemouth House on the Lansdowne Campus. If you can attend please contact Kirsty Stanley on kstanley@bournemouth.ac.uk for further information.

Or, if you can’t attend (we appreciate that this is short notice) but you would still like to share your opinions please complete our survey at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/T3ZCY8B  (If you could complete this by the 6th, that would be very helpful!)

We all hope that you are enjoying your careers as occupational therapists or whatever else you went on to do.

Go ‘Back to School’ – inspire the next generation

Help us inspire students in your former school or college

BU is looking for graduates who’d be willing to visit their former schools, colleges and academies, as part of our work to inform and inspire Year 12 and 13 students who may be considering going to university.

We’re asking you for your help because we know that current students value hearing from successful graduates who once studied at their own school or college. Sharing your experiences of university, school and the world of work can do a lot to motivate those thinking about their next steps.

If you could spare the time to give a talk or presentation at your old school or college, we’d provide information and presentation materials to support you, as well as covering travel costs. It’s also a great way to get involved in your community – and you may even get extra support or recognition from your employer if they encourage volunteering.

We’d love to hear from you if you think this is something you’d be interested in – so please tell us if you are and we’ll let you know a bit more.
