How alumni gifts are helping today’s students

A new generation of students is benefitting from the generosity of Bournemouth alumni.

Gifts made by past students of Bournemouth University – and its predecessors – have helped us offer a range of opportunities for current students this year.

Supporting placement work

Jobs aren’t always easy to come by these days, so an employability-enhancing work experience placement can be a real plus for today’s students.

For many, though, it’s a tricky choice: can you afford to take on your dream placement if it’s unpaid? Or will you miss out because you simply can’t make ends meet without taking on an unrewarding casual job during vacations?

Our alumni-funded Placement Awards offer small grants of £500 to students on unpaid placements. For many, that’s just enough to ease the financial burden of taking up that perfect placement – and means they get a great start to their career.

This year we’ve been able to support four second-year students: Anna, Lewis, Samuel and Tom. With their placements in areas as diverse as marine conservation and children’s theatre schools, they’re also making a positive impact on the environment and the local community.

Enhancing student life

With so many alumni telling us they want to support sport, music, art and other student activities at BU, we’re delighted that we’ve again been able to support a wide range of Students’ Union clubs and societies.

Alumni gifts have helped sports groups from the Swimming Club to the Climbing Society with rising costs of equipment, training and representing BU in national competitions.

We’ve also been able to support other societies making a positive impact on student life: the St John Ambulance branch, Alternative Performance Society, Science Society, Feminist Society and Duke of Edinburgh Award group are among the many recipients this year.
