Graduate elected to CIM regional board

28 year old Leisure Marketing graduate Simon Hood has been elected on to the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) South East regional board.

Simon, who is Head of Marketing for leading relocation specialist HCR, will help steer the direction of the CIM’s South East chapter covering Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Solent and the Thames Valley.

The Chartered Institute of Marketing has twelve Regional Boards within the British Isles, each comprising of nine elected members. Simon commented: “The CIM’s South East region is one of the most diverse regions in the UK, stretching from Thanet in the southeast and the New Forest in the southwest, up to Aylesbury Vale and Milton Keynes in the northwest of the region. I am very excited about the opportunity to support the work of the CIM and to help provide a means by which all members have the opportunity to participate and be involved at local level.

“I am also actively seeking to improve the Institute’s engagement with the new generation of marketers by increasing the online presence of the group as well as improving the perception of the CIM among forward-thinking modern employers.”

Simon, who graduated from Bournemouth University in 2009, continues to show his entrepreneurial spirit; just last year, he independently launched the White Cliffs Business Awards, an awards scheme showcasing local business success within southeast Kent. The first awards ceremony took place in March 2012 and had over 120 business leaders in attendance and later this year will be the staging the first ever White Cliffs Business Summit.

Simon also helped to launch Texas Ask’Em Poker – a novel, fun poker app and Facebook game combining trivia with Texas hold’em poker. As part of the launch Simon implemented a sponsorship deal which resulted in the Texas Ask’Em Poker brand being broadcast around the globe via Sky Sports.

Coming soon: the new Student Centre

A brand new Student Centre is the first development to emerge from BU’s masterplan for the next 40 years.

The six storey Student Centre will include social learning spaces, SUBU offices, a student advice centre, a cafe, radio and media studios, bookable meeting rooms and access points for student services.

The building itself will also be designed meet the highest possible environmental standards, with features including solar panels, green roofs and ground source heat pumps.

Subject to planning approval, it is hoped that construction will begin in June 2013 and the building will open to students during April 2015.

As part of this vision we are committed to providing world class facilities to support world class performance, as well as reducing our impact on the environment.

Over the past few months we have been undertaking a strategic review of our current estate and how we want to see it develop over the coming 40 years. This will support the delivery of BU2018 and beyond. We will be undertaking significant engagement on this wider vision over the coming months.

Markers wanted for Student Development Awards

Help give BU students an edge – support our Student Development Award.

The Student Development Award initiative gives students a way to showcase their accomplishments and be rewarded for taking part in a wide choice of extra-curricular activities.

A choice of over 100 employability-enhancing activities is available, ranging from mentoring fellow students or being a student ambassador, to learning a language or a new skill, or being active in a sports team or music group. While doing this, students accumulate points, attend workshops and produce an e-portfolio for formal assessment.

We are currently looking for helpers to mark the students’ e-portfolios. This involves marking up to five portfolios during April 2013 and can be done at any time of day, either at home or on-campus if you prefer.

Full training is available with on-going support face-to-face, by telephone and by email.

This would be a voluntary role and as a thank-you, you would be invited to the award ceremony on the evening of Thursday 9 May, to meet the students as they receive their awards as well as meeting staff and supporters.

We would really appreciate your support in making this great scheme a success.

If you are interested, please email the Award Co-ordinator, Sonya Harvey: sharvey@bournemouth.ac.uk
